Newborn Session Info
HOW OLD:
Newborn sessions are usually done within the first 5 to 10 days after the baby is born.
WHY:
The reason for this is because, at this early age, we get better pictures and the sessions tend to go smoother.
Babies that are less than 11 days old are more comfortable curling up into womb-like positions, more likely to sleep through the session, and more comfortable being naked.
Baby acne can to set in after about two weeks of being out of the womb, so having the session earlier enables us to capture that soft, perfect baby skin.
TIME OF DAY:
Newborn shoots are best held in the morning, since this is when babies are the most sleepy.
At this age, most babies eat every two hours, so sessions should be scheduled around the baby's eating habits.
SESSION TIMELINE:
The ideal session should start after the baby has fed, will last for about two hours, and end right when the baby starts to get fussy and needs to feed again.
PREPPING FOR THE SHOOT:
Try to keep your baby awake for 1 to 2 hours before the shoot by playing with them or giving them a bath. This will help tire your baby out so they will be more likely to sleep through the shoot.
Another good idea is to feed your baby just moments before the shoot starts- because everyone knows a happy baby is a fed baby!
PROPS:
Incorporating a blankie, hospital bracelet, wedding rings, and small accessories like a hat, bow, flower or headband can add a little extra to the images. Most newborn shoots are done naked - and yes, accidents happen, which is why everything I have is washable! If you prefer to keep a diaper on your baby, make sure to bring along some decorative diaper covers to dress up the look. We can also wrap or swaddle the baby so that you cannot tell the diaper is on.
KEEP HANDY:
-Pacifier (to calm baby if they get fussy)
-Washcloth (for wiping away dry skin and eye boogers)
-Extra bottle (if bottle-fed)
-Favorite blanket
-Baby Wipes
-Diapers
